Four graduates working at Island Roads are returning to the classroom this week to inspire the latest intake of pupils at Medina High School to consider future careers in Science, Civil Engineering and Technology.
Around 120 Year 7 students will be taking part in a full day of science based activities on Tuesday 9 September to learn about drainage, road and bridge building from the four graduates.
The students, who joined the school this September, will also have the chance to work together in teams on various engineering and science related challenges and have the chance to win prizes for their teamwork. They will also be creating flyers promoting careers in civil engineering to demonstrate what they have learnt during the day.
Head of Science, Jackie Clegg who organised the day said, “This is a welcome opportunity for the students to experience and understand more about careers in engineering, science and technology and to hear first hand from young people who are working at Island Roads about the opportunities available to them.
“It’s also a wonderful way for students who are new to the school, and have joined us from many different primaries across the Island, to work together and form new friendships.”
Island Roads’ Graduate Engineer Joanne Huett said, “I’m really looking forward to sharing my experiences with the students and giving them some insight into the diverse range of jobs on offer within the industry. I think it is so important to work with students as early as possible to help guide their education and career choices and I hope that the day will encourage this as a potential career option, especially amongst female pupils.”
Island Roads provides a number of opportunities to students wishing to enter this field including a bursary of £1,000 per year to two students from the Island to study business, engineering or environment related degrees at university. The company also offers apprenticeships each year and apprentices are supported to obtain nationally recognised NVQ Level 2 qualifications in Highways Maintenance (Construction) and Highways Maintenance (Excavation Operations).
