Fishbourne Lane improvement works

One of the key gateway roads to the Isle of Wight is to be upgraded by Island Roads.

The work to Fishbourne Lane, the road serving Wightlink’s Fishbourne terminal, will involve reconstruction and resurfacing of the road from its junction with Elenors Grove to the Wightlink terminal.

Not only will the road upgrade help create a good impression to visitors arriving on the Island, it will also reduce noise from the traffic, including HGVs, that travel along this residential road.

Following a number of meetings attended by Island Roads, Wightlink and the Isle of Wight Council the scheme has been programmed to avoid the peak summer months when traffic is at its highest and, where road closures are required these involve shorter than usual night time shifts (between 9pm and 3.30am, Monday to Thursday and 10pm and 3.30am on Fridays) to minimise the impact on businesses, residents and those travelling to and from the Island.  The remainder of the works are during the daytime and will take place with traffic signals to help control the flow of traffic.

There will be no work undertaken on Saturday and Sunday nights and the road will be re-opened outside of work hours.

Other traffic management will be in place throughout the duration of the project between July 15 and November 1 (note - no work is planned during the school summer holidays). Further details of these arrangements will be announced nearer the time.  Please also note, there are a variety of factors including inclement weather and emergency works that may affect the timing of the scheme.  Signs on site will reflect any changes accordingly.

Wightlink are also reminding customers that they need to arrive at the ferry terminal no less than 30 minutes but no more than an hour before their ferry departure time.

Residents and local businesses in the immediate vicinity of the work have been contacted ahead of the works.  This follows a previous letter drop, site visits and two drop-in sessions earlier in the year at which residents were able to discuss the work and sign up for email updates during the scheme.

Wightlink will introduce a temporary weekday night-time timetable for five weeks in the autumn while the work will be at its height. For more information visit Wightlink’s website here

We realise that despite taking steps to minimise disruption, this scheme will cause some inconvenience, so we would like to thank all businesses, residents in the vicinity, and other key local stakeholders for their support.

This page will be updated during the works to keep you informed of the progress of this road improvement scheme, in addition we have created an e-mail contact group for residents in the area, which will allow us to provide updates throughout the works. If you would like to be included please e-mail stating the scheme location and include your name, address and telephone number (optional). Your details will not be shared or used for any other reason than to keep you updated with this Fishbourne Lane scheme.

The initial phase of the scheme to ensure the area is ready for the main phase of work in the autumn has now been completed successfully and on schedule. The work, which started on 15th July for a five day period, involved the reconstruction of sections of the carriageway from the junction with Elenors Grove to the Wightlink terminal. Our thanks to residents, to Wightlink and other local businesses for their help and understanding as we completed these works.

The second phase of work has involved further strengthening and reconstruction work over a four-week period and is due to complete on schedule this Friday 27th September.  During the work, the road has remained open but temporary traffic lights have been in operation and have been controlled manually during daytime hours to help manage the flow of traffic in the area, including those vehicles travelling to and from Wightlink’s ferry terminal.  During the evening and at weekends when work has not been taking place, the traffic signals have remained in operation for safety and practical reasons while open excavations and heavy machinery are on site.

The final phase of major work to improve Fishbourne Lane is set to begin on Monday 30th September.

The night-time work by Island Roads will see further sections of Fishbourne Lane reconstructed to address weak foundations and the entire length between Elenors Grove and the Wightlink Terminal resurfaced.

The work is scheduled to last for an estimated five weeks, during which time night-time road closures will be in place. To try to keep disruption to a minimum work shifts will be between the later start time of 9pm and the earlier finish time of 3.30am Monday to Thursday and 10pm to 3.30am on Fridays.  There wil be no work on Saturday or Sunday nights.  During the project's work hours Fishbourne Lane will be closed to traffic but pedestrian access will remain.
